CHSP 250 - Urban Culture in China-C

Institution:
Pacific Lutheran University
Subject:
Description:
Explores first hand the dynamic and rapidly transforming cultural life of four major Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong. Our explorations will be carried out through face-to-face meetings with contemporary artists and writers, as well as visits to culturally significant sites that form the background and context for artistic expression in China today. The urban focus will foreground tensions within China's major cities between global and local forces, and the ways in which those tensions are profitably transformed into contemporary art of all kinds.
