WINTER-EVEN YEARS/SPRING-ODD YEARS Prerequisites: Junior or higher standing; MATH 225 and Math 231 and a high-level computer language. (MATH 225 requires MATH 161) The course develops numerical linear algebra and error estimates essential for scientific computing: machine arithmetic, algorithms for solving systems of linear equations, algorithms for computing eigenvalues and singular values (LU, QR, Jacobi's and SVD) and the theory of error estimates through condition numbers. The course also includes such applications as the design and analysis of algorithms for floating-point arithmetic, linear regression, orthogonal linear regression, linear programming, or cubic splines, with applications to engineering and the sciences.
