Prerequisite: DESN 263. An intermediate-level course concentrating on the fundamentals of typography with emphasis on letterforms, typographic syntax, type specification, type as image and the use of type in a variety of communicative purposes. Projects allow students to explore issues of form and meaning, hierarchy, legibility and readability, structure and composition and the design process. This introduction to typography serves as a foundation for students from which to study other aspects of visual communication design in subsequent courses. In addition, typographic history and theory are also discussed.
