A survey course for non-majors and music majors covering the history of the origin of the American music Jazz and it's stylistic development up through the 1990's. The various periods of prejazz and jazz are related to social, political and economic forces during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Included are the sources of African-American musical forms such as spirituals, work songs, ragtime and blues.
