This course will examine the origins and effects of stereotypes and the differences intersectional identities have on women. Specifically, we will critically examine the experiences of girls and women in America from a psycho-socio-cultural perspective with a particular emphasis on the constructs of gender, race, class, and sexuality and how these constructs both independently and collectively mediate the female life experience. Topics will include childhood, love and dating, relationships, sex, marriage, motherhood, media, work, violence, and mental health. This course will explore theories and interpretive frameworks from psychology, sociology, feminist studies, race studies, and cultural studies.
