Students first examine the anthropological literature on the nature of ritual process from a cross-cultural perspective, and then study the nature of ceremonial design, trying to understand the patterns of purpose, symbols, structure and timing that give it power. Ritual ceremony is viewed as a means of dialoguing with the "sacred other," who may be thought ofas soul, spirit, the gods and goddesses, nature, the unconscious or the universe.
