Three hours credit. This course is designed to facilitate development of the basic communication skills necessary to develop an effective helping relationship with clients. Includes the utilization of special skills to assist individuals, families, or groups in achieving objectives through exploration of a problem and its ramifications; examination of attitudes and feelings; consideration of alternative solutions and decision making. The student will demonstrate competency in basic communication skills; define and describe the appropriate use of skills of attending, paraphrasing, summarizing, probing, challenging, and counselor self-disclosure; and identify when each skill is being practiced effectively. The student will demonstrate the ability to use each skill and to integrate all skills appropriately and effectively in a simulated counseling situation; and describe and demonstrate differences in the application of counseling skills with clients of different ethic, age, and gender backgrounds. Prerequisite: DAAC 1311. Three lecture hours each week.
