Study of personality development, human needs, common mental mechanisms, and factors influencing mental health and mental illness. Includes common mental disorders and related therapy. The student will identify the characteristics of mental health; identify common mental illness and maladaptive behaviors; describe trends in psychotherapeutic treatment; discuss the application of therapeutic communication skills; and assist in the formulation of a plan of care for the individual with mental illness or maladaptive behavior. (3 lecture hours per week).
