Three hours credit. A brief survey of the historical development of social services. Emphasis is on current needs, practices, and projected changes. Topics include psychoanalytic theories related to mental retardation, psychotherapy and retarded children, and special problems faced by the mentally retarded. The student will describe the historical development of social services in America; identify current social service needs and practices; list and defend at least four projected changes in the current social service system; describe mental retardation in psychoanalytical terms; and identify and describe solutions to the major problems facing the mentally retarded client. Three lecture hours each week.
