3 hours Prerequisite: ART 2520. A focused examination of developments and changes in Western visual and material culture in the period defined as the modern era in art history, approximately 1800 to 1945. Using a combined chronological, comparative, and thematic approach, the course situates traditional and non-traditional art objects, artifacts, and environments within the contexts of the individual artist's career, the broader stylistic period, and the historical and cultural milieu in which they were made. Students will be introduced to the visual and material culture history of the modern era, including visual literacy and aesthetic appreciation, social and historical contexts of art and its making, the formal and chronological development of individual artistic and period styles, and issues in and approaches to the study of modern art, artifacts, and architecture. Outside readings will be incorporated into class discussions.
