3 hours Prerequisite: ART 2520. The development of painting, sculpture, architecture, and the decorative arts in the United States from colonial era to the present. Works will be examined within the contexts of their political, social, economic, and religious backgrounds and in relationship to European art of the period, and with an emphasis placed on the changing socio-economic position of the United States and the country's rise as an international artistic center in the twentieth century. Significant outside readings will be incorporated into class discussions.
