3 hours 1-2-3 Prerequisites: Two semesters of majors Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Computer Science. An introduction to the application of mathematical/statistical algorithms and computer technology to the annotation and comparison of nucleotide and amino acid sequences from DNA, RNA and proteins. Instructors from several disciplines will present background knowledge of genetics, genomics and proteomics, as well as explanations of algorithms and their formulation and application, including the use of Unix systems and Perl programming language. Emphasis on problem solving. One credit hour of lecture and two credit hours of computer laboratory per week (i.e., 6 contact hours per week).
