This course seeks to introduce undergraduate students to the nature and functions of religious beliefs and institutions in modern societies, with a primary emphasis on conditions in the contemporary United States. It includes individual religious experience, social mechanisms of conversion and commitment, the church-sect-cult distinction, civil religions, religious inspirations or impediments to social change, and the varied process of secularization.
