An introduction to the appreciation of all aspects of Japanese art, including architecture, painting, calligraphy, printmaking, ceramics, Buddhist art, craft, ikebana, design, movies, and anime or animation, as well as hands-on art workshops. Students will explore Japanese art history as a basis for understanding Japanese aesthetics and craftsmanship. Also, students will gain valuable art experiences by studying the various media used to create traditional and contemporary works of Japanese art, including hands-on workshops in raku ceramics, ukiyo-e or woodblock printing, calligraphy, sumi-e or ink painting and basket weaving.
