Special topic (offered irregularly) Introduces major theoretical approaches to the study of social movements, and explores central topics of contemporary research, including: protest cycles; the social and cultural basis of movement participation; countermovements; repression and the state; the internal organization of movements; and the consequences of movements. Illustrative studies are examined to reflect on the strengths and limitations of various approaches. Prerequisite: SOC 1500
