Alternate years ( Spring) Changes in the status of women in Islamic societies are examined, with an emphasis on the diversity of both Muslim communities and the interpretation of sacred texts. Topics include: the “gendered” approachto Islam in Western societies; the economic and political impact of colonialism, the Cold War, globalization, and the Muslim elite; and the struggle by feminists and other women’s rights groups.
