This course seeks to acquaint students with a number of major works of highly imaginative literature by such writers as George MacDonald, J.R.R. Tolkien, H. P. Lovecraft, Angela Carter, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Franz Kafka, Gabriel Marquez, Salman Rushdie, and Jorge Luis Borges. While providing approaches to appreciate and evaluate such texts, the course will also address cultural/literary assumptions about the value of fantasy, both in fi ction and in human development.
