4 hours; 4 credits The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to the literature and sociocultural context of Spanish America from the pre-Colombian civilizations through the “modernismo” period at the end of the 19thcentury. Through the reading of historical accounts, essays, excerpts of novels, short stories, and poetry, as well as through the analysis of art, film, and music from the different regions, we will span over 400 years of Spanish American literature and culture up to the emergence of the independent American states. Prerequisite: SPN 313
