4 hours; 4 credits This course examines the historical, philosophical, and cultural roots of contemporary education. The issues of race, class, gender, ability, immigration, and language acquisition are examined for their impact on the learning of adolescents. The course deepens students’ understanding of the power that social, political, and economic forces have on the work of teachers and on the lives of adolescents, families, and communities. Students spend fifteen (15) hours in diverse and inclusive educational environments examining the relationship between theory and practice. (LA&S) Prerequisites: Sophomore standing and a GPA of 2.75 or above
