REL 2020 - Faith Alfresco: Religious Innovations in the 21st Century

Institution:
Curry College
Subject:
Description:
Religion in America is changing in exciting ways, with new religious traditions entering into our landscape with every passing year. Many people actively participate in other religious traditions without understanding the richness of the origins of their practice. Note the popularity of yoga (a variation on Hindu practices), meditation (often influenced by Buddhism), and many different applications of "Zen". Even Winnie-the-Pooh has his own Dao! What does it mean to "mix and match" different aspects of faith traditions? Is it possible to follow more than one tradition without running into contradiction? What about those of us who identify themselves as "spiritual" but not "religious"? The point of this course is to draw on the rich histories of diverse world religions to better understand our contemporary situation.
