Basic Design serves as a bridge to all studio courses in the freshman curriculum. It involves the understanding and manipulation of the formal elements of the visual language. In the first semester, point, line, plane, shape and texture are discussed in terms of the visual dynamic they set up. A variety of materials are employed as students investigate design principles involving balance, repetition, pattern, proportion and scale and their relationship to various compositional formats.
