3 credits Physical education majors only. An introduction to general approaches to curriculum theory and design and to instructional methods. Through an examination of the nature of curriculum across disciplines, interdisciplinary approaches to curriculum design, the construction of lesson plans and unit plans, and various methodological strategies, students are introduced to the most significant aspects of classroom organization and practice. Strategies addressed include the art of questioning and the integration of critical thinking into teaching. Emphasis is placed on different models of curriculum design, planning, and teaching. Special attention is given to a multicultural curriculum, as well as methods of assessment, including alternative assessment. Twenty hours of field placement in an elementary or secondary school are required.
