This elective course is offered in different semesters as a means of helping pre-service teachers acquire information and skills in a variety of current topics in education. See EDU 675 for graduate level. Working with the Hearing Impaired Student in the Classroom: This course provides you with an understanding of the needs of a deaf student in your class with or without an interpreter. The pre-service teacher will become acquainted with deafness and the accommodations needed to provide approperiate services for the student. An overall view all will be given of the degrees of deafness, acoustial equipment including cochlear implants, TTYs and Deaf Relay service, classroom accommodations and expectations including working with an interpreter. An introduction to American Sign Language and lip-reading practices will also be provided.
