Prerequisites: Completion of an AS degree in Nursing; and junior level standing or consent of the instructor. Introduction to a systems approach to culturally competent nursing care within the health care system for the baccalaureate prepared registered nurse. Concepts necessary for succeeding in the professional nurse role including the program philosophy, conceptual framework and objectives are presented. The readiness and flexibility of the profession to adapt to a changing society will be discussed as well as the new opportunities for professional development. Other topics presented include nursing theory, health care delivery methods, ethics and values, professionalism and accountability, underserved populations, and current trends in health care. 3 lecture hours.
