Session Cycle: Fall and Spring Yearly Cycle: Annual This course examines the major theories used in the study of human communication and the primary theoretical perspectives assumed by contemporary communication researchers. Because there is no single, grand theory of communication, the explanation of communication behavior has been undertaken by a number of other disciplines including anthropology, English, cognitive and social psychology, sociology, and linguistics. Students will examine the contributions of each of these disciplines. An important focus of the class is on examining some of the epistemological assumptions upon which various theoretical positions are based. With a foundation in these assumptions, students should be able to grasp some unity in the midst of diversity.
