Examples of four major types of contemporary personality theory are examined, contrasted, and compared. The role of theory and the relationship of research and evaluation strategies to theory are considered with examples from each of the theories studied, which include psychoanalytic, trait, phenomenological, and behavioral approaches to the study of personality.
