A study of both the basic principles of democracy and also several modern ideologies which operate within the framework of democratic values and practices. Among those ideologies examined are liberalism, conservatism, democratic capitalism, democratic socialism, Christian democracy, and liberation theology. Central to the examination will be such problems as the role and value of the individual, the powers of government, and the organization of the economy and the distribution of rewards within the societies proposed by each ideology.
