This course develops core skills necessary for further study of the methods and materials unique to instrumental, choral, and general music education. It provides an introduction to the teaching and learning process for students preparing to teach children, an overview of the music education profession, sociological and psychological principles which influence the development of musical skills, understandings and values, and pedagogical approaches, principles and strategies appropriate to a variety of music teaching and learning situations. Prerequisite: sophomore standing in music, or permission of instructor. Credit: 4 semester hours. Note: A letter grade of at least B- must be attained in MUS 181 in order to count for graduation as a music education major.
