This course focuses on the essential characteristics of the ancient Greek and Roman theatre. We will begin by studying the physical structure of Greek and Roman theaters and how both tragedies and comedies were staged. We will then read (in English translation) and discuss selected plays (including both tragedy and comedy) by ancient Greek and Roman playwrights, and watch and critique performances of each of the works that are read. The course will culminate in a performance by the students of selected scenes from a Greek or Roman play.
