This offering is not of the usual classroom type. It permits a student to undertake a minor research problem under the direction of a faculty member in the department. The purpose is to effect the transition from experiments for which the outcome is known to designing and doing experiments in order to secure the information necessary to solve a problem. Admission to Chemistry 391 is by permission of the Chair or a designated adviser on the basis of the student's previous work and the belief of the adviser and at least one instructor that the student can profit from the research experience. Once permission is secured, the student talks with several faculty members about their research interests and possible research problems. By mutual agreement of the student and faculty member, the student becomes part of an ongoing research group. In this course, the time and duration of the work is arranged with the supervising faculty member. In general there is not the usual correlation of scheduled "laboratory hours" and credits; rather, the student will find that research demands a continued ongoing effort.
