This course will examine the role of religion in modern society using classical and contemporary sociology theories. The course will explore the role of religion in the organization of meaning within human societies and the contribution of religion to the construction, maintenance, and transformation of the social order. Topics will include: religious consciousness; religion and identity; secularization; religion and gender, race, class, and age; religious solutions to the problems of social order; religious movements (sects and cults); and religion and social change.
