This course deals with the archaeology of the medieval and modern world. It focuses on problems in the archaeology of medieval and early modern Europe and on those parts of the world (particularly North America) colonized by Europeans. Through readings, class exercises, films, field trips, and a research project, students will become familiar with the ways historical archaeologists work, and the contributions of archaeology to an understanding of historical times; with important archeological sites; and with topics in historical archaelogy, including the archaeology of gender, class, and ethnicity, colonialism and culture contact, and the integration of documentary and archaeological research.
