This course is designed to familiarize students with the biology and natural history of marine mammals. Emphasis is placed on whales, dolphins, and seals of the western North Atlantic, but species from all over the world will be discussed. Topics to be considered include evolution, anatomy, behavior, field identification, the history of whaling, and contemporary conservation problems. Handson activities include one evening laboratory work (harbor porpoise or seal dissection) and marine mammal survey on Massachusetts Bay. Prerequisites: BIO 160 and two additional biology course.
