A survey of the development of Western art from Prehistoric times to the end of the Middle Ages. A broad historical and stylistic approach frames the course, but the students will learn a select number of works in closer detail. This course acquaints the students through lectures, discussions, and visits to local collections, with the tool of visual analysis, the ability to decode visual images from the past and present. Close studies acquaint the students with the elements of visual language and help them to develop critical skills which can be used to further their understanding of the visual arts.
