Prerequisites: ENG 111, 112, or ENG 131, 132 LEC 3 hrs., LAB 0 hrs. A survey of American literature from colonial beginnings to the Civil War, including but not restricted to Franklin, Cooper, Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman. The influence of women, Native Americans, African Americans and others who contributed to the development of American culture may be examined as well as concepts such as Calvinism, Neo-classicism, and Romanticism.
