This course traces the settlement as well as political, social and economic developments in the United States from Native American origins to the end of the Reconstruction in 1877. Topics include the American Indian, Hispanic, Afro-American and Northern European contributions, the Enlightenment in America, the struggle for independence, the formation of a national government, democratic and popular developments, westward expansion, the controversy over slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction.
