In this course, students will read The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of the Lord of the Rings, and also view and discuss the films that have been based on the three volumes of the trilogy. They will analyze these works critically and in the process learn about a variety of subjects that interested Tolkien and influenced his fiction: historical linguistics, medieval literature, and mythology.
