This course introduces the fundamental principles and concepts of chemistry, including such topics as measurement, atomic structure, nuclear processes, the periodic table, chemical bonds, solids, liquids, gases, stoichiometry, solutions, rates of chemical reactions(catalysis) oxidation-reduction, acids and bases; biologically active molecules, including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and drugs; and a study of alternate energy sources, such as solar energy, nuclear energy and biomass. Throughout the course, the above topics will be related to the broader environmental, social and economic issues, such as, but not limited to, the ozone shield and the possibility of global warming relative to modern technological society.
