Songs from swing, bebop, cool, and contemporary periods. Exploration of unitonal, unimodal, polytonal, polymodal melodies with small instrumental groups. Innovations in jazz improvisation. Musicians to be studied include Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joe Farrell, and Miles Davis. Prerequisite: MUSPE 456.
