Explores the Gothic genre as both a literary mode and cultural phenomenon. Beginning with a detailed analysis of the cultural context in which the gothic novel was first produced in Britain, the course will then investigate selected texts from other historical moments which might also be construed as “gothic,” including American appropriations of the gothic in boththe 19th and 20th centuries.
