A study of both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of the use of military force in pursuit of political objectives. Will explore the historical record of these uses and, more importantly, will examine their effectiveness as tools of diplomacy. Specific attention will be given to both the French and U.S. wars in Indochina. The contemporary record of conflict within the Third World is also considered. Prerequisite: any PO200 or PO300 level class, or permission of the instructor.
