The beginning social work theory course is designed to equip students with the knowledge of basic social work concepts, values, and ethics within a framework of a systems approach. At all stages, emphasis is placed on integrating field learning by clarifying the purpose of social work, the organizational structure of the social service delivery systems, the complexities of personal and professional value underpinnings. Through small group interaction, an attempt is made to develop an awareness of communication skills involved even in brief and simple field assignments. Must be taken concurrently with SW 455. Prerequisite: SW 451. Recommended: PS 337 Group Dynamics.
