A study of the prominent works of nineteenth century American literature to see the shape of the European Romantic movement as it crosses the Atlantic and enters American culture. Students may discuss: the Puritan roots of the Transcendental movement; the Radical movement in America; the state of religion in ante-bellum America; the impact of growing industrialization on American society; the artist’s reaction to the nervousness and dislocation of the period.
