This course introduces students to many of the general topics related to the scope of occupational therapy practice that will be revisited throughout the occupational therapy program. Students learn the impact of historical events on the development and current practice of occupational therapy and begin to explore the role of engagement in occupations and purposeful activity in promoting health, growth and fulfillment of human needs across the life span. The importance of professional values and ethics in the development of a therapeutic sense of self and sensitivity to multicultural issues are introduced. The purposes and types of occupatioanl therapy documentation along with the Occupational Therapy Framework for Practice, the Guide to OT Practice, medical terminology, and the structure of occupational therapy professional organizations are also presented. Students are oriented to the philosophy, structure and process of the problem based learning instructional method, strategies for self-directed learning through small group discussions, online components, lectures, and assignments. 3 sem. hrs. 3 crs. * These courses are required for students who have been accepted into either the Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy Graduate Program but who have limited work experience.
