This intensive course will examine the child and adolescent with chronic illness and discuss treatment approaches from a multi-disciplinary or bio-psycho-social intervention model. The instructor will draw upon extensive experience and observations from working in clinics, hospitals or in the field with children who have been diagnosed with such disorders as: cancer, hemophilia, AIDS, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, endocrine/ growth problems, cleft palette, genetic anomalies, mental health DSM-IV disorders, as well as children with multiple handicaps and disabilities. Emphasis will be given to practical ways counselors and other mental health professionals and teachers can build and maintain therapeutic relations with children who have been dealt this difficult challenge of handling a chronic or life threatening illness. Additionally, this course will give special attention to identifying needs, assessing, and treating families and siblings of children who have a chronic illness.
