This course examines the African and African- American experience in British North America and the United States. It stresses that the institution of chattel slavery varied according to time and location. Special emphasis is placed upon the resistance of the enslaved, cultural continuities and discontinuities with Africa, the development of free black communities, African- American religion, and family life under slavery.
