This course is designed to provide the student with a basic knowledge of moderate to severe disabilities. Topics include definitions, identification procedures, due process rights, cultural and linguistic diversity, and characteristics for individuals with intellectual disabilities, including medical aspects; individuals who display developmental as well as multiple handicaps; and other conditions. The course will also deal with the major past and present educational, social/emotional, and legal issues relevant to those individuals. These issues will be referenced to inclusive practices that focus on the similarities between students with moderate to severe disabilities and their typical peers. Required field experience in diverse settings - 6 hours. Pre-requisite: EDSP 200, EDFD 110.
