A survey of African history from the origins of humanity until the present. Students learn more about the modern period, particularly the effects of the slave trade, colonialism, and neocolonialism on Africa. Special emphasis is given to the genocides in the Congo Free State at the end of the nineteenth century and in Rwanda at the close of the twentieth. Foreign studies. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing or permission of the instructor. 3 credits.
