This course provides an overview and history of operating systems (OS). The OS can provide a programming environment, a file system with related structures and utilities. Management of system resources, such as DASD, memory, processes and queues, is explored. Fundamentals of system configuration and recovery techniques and methodologies are examined to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Topics include control programs, system service and utility programs, and file maintenance. Prerequisite: CSC 3400.
