For first-year students. Involves two central goals that are mutually reinforcing: to teach critical thinking and writing and to address the challenges and opportunities of living in a multiracial and multicultural society. Focuses on development of student papers, from first draft through revisions and editing. Bases writing on personal experience as well as analysis of texts from a variety of disciplines. Includes a service-learning component in some sections. Section topics from 2006-2008 included Achievement Or Opportunity Gap; Talk is Telling: Language and Power; From Borders to Barrios; Decades Matter: The FiftiesBeginning or Ending?; Questions of Social Justice; Bearing Witness Thru Words; and Politics, Protest & Music . Honors sections are designated as HON. Some sections may be taught as learning communities. Faculty from across the College teach in this program.
